Not only do all mammals have an endocannabinoid system but so do all vertebrates: birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. What these species have in common is a cartilaginous spinal column leading to a distinct head with a brain. We know that CBD works directly on the bodies endocannabinoid system that plays an important role in the central nervous system.
Importance of Endocannabinoid System
This means that hypothetically all these animals have the biological systems in place and ability to take cannabinoids into their blood stream and use them to regulate various functions.
CBD for Mammals
The main use of CBD for pets today would be in that of dogs and cats, partially because they are the most popular pets in Britain today but also because they tend to be the most obvious sufferers of issues that CBD may be able to help. Many use CBD for their dogs and cats sleep issues and anxiety issues.
Evidence to suggest the effectiveness of CBD in pets is very scarce as the subject has not been investigated heavily due to legal issues and the relative novelty of CBD products. It is always important to visit your veterinarian before using CBD on your pet especially if they are already taking medication.
Young Sammie here has successfully used CBD oil to soothe anxiety effects that come with thunderstorms and other loud noises. She was given CBD oil mixed with salmon oil, a drop a day.
Full spectrum CBD products can have a distinctive taste that pets, especially cats, do not like therefore some choose to mask the taste with another oil. Many companies actually sell CBD oils that are pre-mixed with tastes that your pet would enjoy!
She was given a drop a day with the salmon oil. There are no specific recommendations given for the dosage size for pets because it is not recommended by any medical body yet. But if you were considering the use of CBD with your pet it would be good to remember the size of them compared to you! A much smaller dose at first would always be beneficial.
Hopefully in the future much more research will be conducted on the topic and thing will become clearer. It is important to note however that CBD is generally considered very low risk substance and that mammals do have an endocannabinoid system capable of handling cannabinoids.
